WHO ARE THE OCTOBER 17 MOVEMENT?

MILAN — The Movimento 17 Ottobre (M17O, also styled M1710) is a recently formed Italian protest network named after the October 17, 2026 demonstrations in Milan, which were marked by clashes with police and damage to shops.

Emerging through Instagram and Telegram, the movement called for nationwide demonstrations every Saturday, demanding political change amid anger over living costs, wages and the future of young Italians.

Its manifesto rejects political parties, traditional unions and established leadership. It describes itself as a decentralized youth movement, without a president, headquarters or formal membership.

The movement publicly called for protests to continue until the government's resignation. Its social-media channels also circulated messages defending the demonstrators and accusing the authorities of repression.

Investigators now suspect that Youssef Siher played a central role in operating the network's online communications. Whether the movement's political activities were connected to organized criminal violence remains a matter for the investigation and the courts.
